Understanding how food, exercise and mental health can all have an effect on our overall happiness is part of what defines our wellness. Our metabolism is a large part of that overall picture. It is our duty to stay in touch with our bodies and be aware of what it is what they’re telling us. Some people have naturally fast metabolisms while some of us are just not as fortunate. There are, however, steps that can be taken to help improve your metabolism.
Here are 5 tips on how you can speed up your metabolism:
Keep your body warm.
Keeping the body warm, especially the core, helps promote blood flow and aids in digestion.
Have small meals every 3 to 4 hours
Small meals will keep your metabolism working consistently, as opposed to a constant cycle. Small “meals” such as eating sliced apple with peanut butter, plain yogurt with berries, carrots with hummus, almonds, and even a peanut butter and jelly sandwich on gluten-free bread are all good options.
Gain muscle, burn fat with weight training
Working to gain muscle has the added benefit of burning fat at the same time. Try adding some light weights to a cardio workout.
Drink lots of water
In order to process calories, our body needs water. Your metabolism will slow down if your body has not had enough water. Studies have shown that people who 8 or more glasses of water per day burn significantly more calories than those who do not.
Yoga can certainly boost your metabolism. Yoga incorporates twists, which activates your digestive system and metabolism.
